The government of east Indian state of Orissa will set up a Silk and Sericulture Research Centre (SSRC) in Bhubaneswar, Usha Devi, Minister of Textile and Handlooms and Handicrafts, informed the state Assembly.
The House was informed that setting up of the Centre involves an investment of Rs. 61.6 million.
The Minister informed that in the 2012-13 state budget, a sum of Rs. 10 million was earmarked for the SSRC, and its construction work would begin soon. The project is likely to conclude within a period of three years, she said.
Later on, she revealed that financial support has also been extended for developing permanent infrastructure for the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) at Bhubaneswar.
Likewise, efforts are also being made in association with world renowned designers to encourage production and sale of innovatively designed handloom items in the home as well as overseas markets, she informed.
