The traditional silk textiles from the Northeastern state of Assam will soon have modern designs and patterns provided by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and National Institute of Designs (NID).
The handwoven patterns on muga, eri and paat silks of Assam are in huge demand, but NIFT's centre in Shillong and NID's centre in Jorhat have expressed interest in giving a contemporary touch to these silk textiles to make them abreast with emerging international trends.
Tapan Kumar Sharma, Marketing Manager at North Eastern Handicraft and Handlooms Development Corporation Ltd (NEHHDC) said the handloom industry has taken the news positively as it believes that NIFT and NID's expertise would give a fresh look, instead of the traditional designs.
He informed that at all the fairs organized by NEHHDC in different parts of India, the various forms of silk, commonly bracketed as Assam Silk, are in huge demand.
He revealed that NEHHDC forwards the feedback received from prospective buyers to the concerned research and development institutions for creating new products.
