A handloom and handicraft fair, aimed at extending a wider platform to the artisans from the Northeastern states of India, was held in Assam's Guwahati city.
The three-day event attracted participation of handloom and handicraft artisans from eight states in the region, who showcased their products.
Besides, a seminar titled 'Role of handloom mark in the development of the handloom sector of the NE' was also held during the event.
The event extended a common interactive platform to the industry experts, artisans and stakeholders, and also updated the artisans regarding various Government schemes aimed at providing technical and financial assistance to them.
Next to agriculture, handlooms and handicrafts offer a major employment avenue in the Northeast, with several people depending on it for their livelihood. The sector also acts as a major revenue generator for the states in the region.
The event was organized under the auspices of the Khadi Village Industries Board of Arunachal Pradesh in collaboration with the North East Institute of Fashion Technology.
Mr. S Ulanganathan, a Ministry of Textiles' official, said the fair was aimed at bringing the handicraft and handloom art of the Northeast to limelight.
