Cotton imported by a province in China during the current year has failed to meet the national standards.
The imports of cotton by Fujian province have leaped since 2010, but the quality of imported cotton has gone down, according to a report.
The Fuzhou Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau stated that all the 18 batches of cotton, worth US$ 16.27 million, imported this year failed to meet Chinese national standards.
The Inspection Bureau said it mainly found two problems with imported cotton – short in weight and mixing of old stock with new cotton.
The Bureau has urged firms around Fuzhou to select reputed overseas cotton traders for importing cotton. It has further asked them to clearly specify all clauses in the trading contract.
The Bureau also suggested that traders and companies should stress on the weight of cotton, quarantine certificates and quality inspection while importing cotton.
