The production capacity of ethylene in Asian countries would rise by 37 percent from 45.8 million tons in 2010 to about 62.8 million tons in 2016, according to Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
The Ministry expects India and China to lead in increasing their ethylene production capacity, while the total ethylene production capacity is likely to decrease in Japan and Taiwan.
METI expects global ethylene production capacity to grow by nearly 20 percent from 144.9 million tons in 2010 to about 173.2 million tons in 2016.
The surge in demand for ethylene from downstream industries, including monoethylene glycol (MEG), is expected to spur the demand for ethylene, which would be the main driving force behind the increase in production capacities, METI said.
In the Americas, the ethylene production capacity is likely to grow by 16 percent from 38.9 million tons in 2010 to 45.1 million tons in 2016, mainly owing to the construction of new plants due to shale gas.
