China's cotton production likely to surpass target

03
Aug '12
The production of cotton in China, the world’s largest importer and consumer of cotton, is likely to exceed the 6.99 million tons of target set by the Government for the 2012-13 seaon, the China Cotton Association has said.

In 2011-12 season, China produced 6.6 million tons of cotton and the target for 2012-13 is already 6 percent more than the previous year.

The overall cotton production in China is expected to get a boost owing to better soil and weather conditions, along with reduced crop diseases, according to the China Cotton Association.

The production of cotton is likely to increase despite an 8.8 percent year-on-year drop in cotton planting acreage across the country. Cotton has been sown on an area of 7,315 million mu (1 mu = 0.067 hectares) in China this year.

The association said that better cotton output this year would bring down the domestic cotton prices and deter imports.

Last year, China’s cotton imports, mostly from India and the US, rose by 18.6 percent year-on-year to 3.36 million tons.

On the Dalian Commodity Exchange, cotton prices have declined by nine percent so far this year due to slackening of demand from textile mills.
