Govt's intervention necessary to protect garments & textiles

Garments and Textiles Export Board in Philippines would be replaced by a new council, Trade Secretary Peter Favila said.

The new council, comprised representatives from the DTI, Department of Finance, Bureau of Customs and private garment sector would study the entire industry, added Favila.

Favila negotiated with five garment organizations last week and assured them of government support at a time of massive reorganization at the DTI.

As garment and textile industries encountered problems like short resolution of issues surrounding several accreditation processes, manufacturers now request government to intervene at their times of distress.

To avoid such situtations, the garment industry wants one-step process with government agency serving them when problems occur.

In spite of stiff global competition, particularly in case of exports from China, the Philippine garment and textile industries remains confident.
