Jute sacks are a major challenge for Cocoa Board, and therefore Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod) imports jute sacks from neighbouring country Cote d'Ivoire, the world's biggest producer of the commodity.
This is just a temporary solution to cope with scarcity, which hampers the transfer of the beans from buying centres for shipment, a senior official of Cocobod said.
Ghana has to resort to Cote d'Ivoire because traditional sources of jute sacks, mainly India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have failed to fulfil the needs due to unexpected problems, said Tony Fofie, Deputy Cocobod Chief Executive.
Licensed buying agents of Ghana had complained that there were no jute sacks to bag cocoa.
Cote d'Ivoire has exported a good deal of sacks to Cocobod for fast delivery to the buyers to compensate current dearth, said Fofie.
He said Cocobod had placed an order of 5,000 bales of jute sacks to the Cote d'Ivoire, and almost 50 percent of the order had been provided.
