Dramatic upsurge recorded in footwear exports in Jan 2006

After a tumultuous 2005, footwear industry bounced back in January, returning a figure of US $ 310 million that is 26 percent above its last year target.

This in fact is the highest growth over the past one year period, reveled export statistics of the country.

Current export price went up $7.46 per pair of shoes, recording a 15.32 percent rise in January, 2006.

Anti-dumping cases filed by EU have not yet been resolved, which hampered footwear exports during entire 2005.

Thus, footwear exports achieved a modest result in export turn-over worth $3.04 billion, down $60 million as compared with the target.

Export target for this has been set at $ 3.35 billion and experts are of the view that seeking Northern American markets, especially US would only help in achieving the set target.

Recently, Vietnam has moved up to fourth position as leading exporter of capped-knitting shoes in Japanese market, which brought export earnings worth $ 24 million in 2005, up 7.87 percent over 2004 (3.37 percent).

Export of leather bags was to the tune of $13.4 million, up 40 percent over previous year that was highest growth registered since 2000.

Due to inherent product strength and other advantages, Vietnam's leather bags have been winning over competition in the same product category compared to goods from Thailand, France and India.

Vietnam sources almost all its shoes sole requirement from China due to cheap prices prevailing there. In 2005, about $ 55.47 million in value worth made in China shoes sole, accounting for 41.8 percent in terms of material import value.
