Smart Textiles, where future is promising!

Deister Electronic GmbH (Germany) is presenting what it calls the 'Textag. This is a textile transponder (information carrier) which has aerial thread incorporated within the textile fabric, along with a RFID-Chip.

Whilst it retains all the characteristics of a fabric, it facilitates the storage of production and delivery data directly within the finished product, enabling each individual process such as production, despatch, shelf time and purchase to be recorded at the level of the individual product and monitored until switched off at the cash desk.

An integrated EAS (electronic article surveillance) function sets off an alarm should the product be stolen or enables tracking. When incorporated in technical textiles the 'Textag' facilitates a number of applications such as source protection (copyright protection) or the storage of security-specific data.

Radiation protection
In addition to materials that are capable of conducting electricity or have magnetic properties, another area of future research will be electro-magnetic protection clothing (EM/IR). The Swiss Spinnerei, Spoerry & Co, has developed a dual-composite yarn that consists of a conductive metal filament and a textile base material. Its special weave makes it a modern, 'shielding' alternative to the well-known carbon fibre materials.

Application area: military clothing, protective clothing. Even t-shirts and underwear are capable of providing electro-magnetls.
