Instituto Nacional de Estatística de Portugal (INE) released the Consumer Prices Index for Janurary 2006.

It reported that in January, the goods and services included in the Portuguese Consumer Price Index (CPI) cost on average 2.6 percent more than in January 2005, the same as in the previous month.

The core inflation index, which excludes energy components and fresh unprocessed food products and intends to reflect price growth trends, rose at a lower rate than the CPI. Compared with January 2005, this index increased 1.6 percent in January 2006, 1.0 percentage point lower than the CPI.

The CPI 12-month average rate was, for the fourth month in a row, 2.3 percent. On a monthly basis, the CPI fell 0.5 percent. A year earlier, the CPI observed the same monthly rate of change.

The main contribution to the CPI monthly rate came from changes in the prices of clothing and footwear products.

These products cost, on average, 17.7 percent less than in December 2005, reflecting the sales period that normally occurs at this time of the year. In contrast, the main upward contributions were found in tobacco, gas and fuel price changes.

In January 2006, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) for Portugal rose 2.6 percent when compared with January 2005, decreasing 0.4 percentage points when compared with December 2005. The HICP 12-month average rate was 2.2 percent, one percentage point higher than in December 2005.

The gap between the Portuguese and the Euro-zone 12- month average rate of change is estimated to have increased from -0.1 to 0.0 percentage points in January 2006.
