A carpet auction organised by KMT Textiles is scheduled to be held at KL Hilton on March 29 which will include 80 special handpicked carpets with intricate designs and lustrous colours.

KMT Textiles specialises in buying and selling Persian carpets having outlets around the world.

Carpet making is a traditional art form of Middle East countries creating handmade carpets involving intricate artwork, fine texture, and vibrant colours that never fade.

Most expensive silk carpet had 4,000 knots per square inch and took 11 years to make, to be valued at RM7.4 million.

Manager Ozgur Zorlu said that bids can also be made over the phone.

Good carpets do not fade but increase in value with age with no two carpets having the same design and the most expensive carpet sold in an auction locally was sold in RM130,000, he said.

They are highly priced and passed down from one generation of collectors to the next.

Carpets are generally divided into three age groups with new ones being 30 years and below, nomadic 50 years and above, and old or antique carpets are 100 years and above.

Best brands include Kumkapi and the Hereke from Iran and Turkey, two of the best carpet making countries in the world.
