Uzbekistan's textile export volume rising every year: PM

The volume of textile exports made by the Central Asian country of Uzbekistan is rising every year and has crossed US$ 1 billion mark this year, Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyayev said at the X International Uzbek Cotton and Textile Fair in Tashkent.

Speaking at the fair, Mr. Mirziyayev said the Government is creating new cotton ginning facilities in continuation of its policy to reduce export of raw cotton. He said the Government is planning to increase domestic processing of cotton fibre and raise it to 500,000 tons by 2015-end.

In early 1990s, Uzbekistan processed around seven percent of the total volume of cotton produced by the country. This has now increased to around 40 percent of the total volume, as per official statistics.

Mr. Mirziyayev said significant structural changes have been brought about in Uzbek textile industry since the first cotton fair in 2005.

At present, about 300 companies operate in the Uzbek textile industry and their products are exported to nearly 50 countries.

Last year, Uzbekistan produced 3.3 million tons of raw cotton, and the country is expected to produce nearly the same amount this year.

Around 1,000 buyers from 40 countries attended the two-day cotton fair. Within the framework of the fair, current problems and prospects for the world cotton market development were discussed.

Further, leading international experts presented their views on different topics such as: World cotton and textile market: demand and supply, prices and factors; Current state and prospects of production and marketing of cotton in Uzbekistan; New technologies to increase cotton competitiveness; World market of cotton textile: present and future; and Investment climate and foreign investors in cotton and textile industry of Uzbekistan; etc. (RKS)
