Woolmark Intelligence Harvest names Italy top export market

Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) announces that Woolmark Market Intelligence Harvest trade data reveal that the four leading export destinations for Australia's wool top exports in 2005 were, in rank order, Italy, South Korea, China and Taiwan.
However, the volume of wool top exported from Australia in 2005 was less than a quarter of the volume exported in 2000. This annual drop since 2000 can be attributed to China taking a larger and larger proportion of Australia's wool exports and, at the same time, cutting its demand for wool top in favour of greasy wool.
In 2005, Italy accounted for and increasing share of Australia's wool top exports (by weight) compared with 2000. South Korea's share also increased in 2005, since 2000. China, on the other hand, has seen its share decline over the same period.
The share going to "Other" countries has also fallen away since 2000, with imports of Australian wool top by the USA, Mexico, Japan, Iran, Germany and Hong Kong all falling steeply.
