Marimekko's exports up 25%, growth in home market 'slower than expected'

Clothing and textiles maker Marimekko Group's net sales rose by 5% to €32,925 thousand (€ 31,330 thousand), in the January-June period of 2006. Exports and income from international operations increased by 25% to €7,888 thousand (€6,319 thousand).

The Group's operating profit amounted to €3,596 thousand (€4,947 thousand). Earnings per share were €0.33 (€0.46). Growth in full-year net sales is estimated to be well under 10%, the Group's growth target for 2006. Full-year earnings will be affected by weaker than expected sales trends in Finland. The Group racks up its strongest earnings in the last two quarters of the financial year.

In the January-June period, retail sales of clothing in Finland grew by 4.4% (Association of Textile and Footwear Importers and Wholesalers). Sales of menswear rose by 5.2%, womenswear by 4.0%, and childrenswear by 4.3%. Sales of bags increased by 7.2% and home textiles by 5.4%. In the January-May period of 2006, exports of clothing (SITC 84) increased by 6%, and imports by 8%. Exports of textile products (SITC 65) increased by 3% and imports by 4%.

In the January-June period of 2006, the Marimekko Group's net sales rose by 5.1% to €32,925 thousand (€31,330 thousand). Net sales in Finland grew by 0.1% to €25,037 thousand (€25,011 thousand). Exports and income from international operations increased by 24.8% and accounted for 24.0% of the Group's net sales.

The Group's net sales of clothing rose by 5.4% to €15,279thousand (€14,495 thousand) in January-June 2006. Sales of clothing in Finland rose slightly. Growth in exports varied between markets. Net sales of bags increased by 0.6% to €4,522 thousand (€4,496 thousand). Sales in Finland declined significantly, while trends in exports were good and sales rose in all markets.
