Government has expressed confidence that within two years, India will be self-dependent in the production of long staple cotton.

Right now, four lakh bales of cotton are imported with largest share going to Pakistan, informed Textile Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela.

He also said that cotton production will improve not only in terms of quantity but quality as well resulting into India having a good export market.

Cotton produce in China and US has not been encouraging which will only provide good markets for Indian markets.

Vaghela looked optimist saying that Minimum Support Price may not be required as there will be plenty of markets available to Indian farmers but to keep farmers confidence going, Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) may opt for this.

He informed that Government was looking to encourage the cultivation of long staple fibre in South India as it was producing good quality long staple fibre which will ultimately help in turning India self independent.
