Textile education on lines of medical and agricultural education in the country has been mooted by Mr M S Mathivanan, Chairman, International Textile Education Consortium (ITEC) and President of Textile Association of India (TAI).

International Textile Education Consortium (ITEC) has been formed during this Conference and Mathivanan heads the body as its Chairman while Prof. Phillip Yeoung of Hong Kong University has been appointed General Secretary.

Headquartered in India, ITEC is constituted of 25 member countries promoting textile education. The United Nations and other organisations and bodies will be approached for their support in conducting research projects in 'natural fibre' at different Universities.

Delivering the valedictory address at the two-day International Textile Education Conference, Mathivanan said India had a growing market share in world textile trade.

For India to emerge second biggest supplier of textiles and apparels by 2010, next to China, he said manpower had to be trained in modern technology, particularly in weaving weaving, spinning and stitching.

He opined that currently, Industrial Training Institutes were not equipped to help grow the industry as per the desired expectations.

He informed that India stood 12th in the global textile business and its export share of 35 percent amongst the country's exports, is to touch 50 percent.

Besides workers being imparted necessary education, supervisors and textile engineers also required to keep abrest with modern tecnology with special emphasis on designing and marketing, he observed.

Mathivanan concluded that all this will help 'value add' in the textile chain and enable the country produce quality fabrics giving competitive edge to Indian textile industry.
