Lack of PPD checkpoints affects cotton consignment

Government has stopped a cotton consignment from India at the Wagah border. This move is severely criticized by textile industry, a ministry official revealed.

The Ministry of Commerce has contacted the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MINFAL) for approval of the shipment because it was first consignment imported through land route instead of sea.

According to MINFAL, there is lack of land route entry points with plant protection department (PPD).

PPD is having no arrangement for fumigation of cotton and to give quarantine certificate to 200,000 tons of cotton, official sources said.

MINFAL for only this time has directed the PPD to take actions for earlier delivery of consignment to the millers. Millers should have contacted MINFAL and they would have arranged required tests, he said.
