Farmers angry on delay in procurement of cotton

As loss-making monopoly cotton purchase scheme has been withdrawn by the Maharashtra Government, cotton growers were protesting against delay in procurement at local Government purchasing center.

Police had to open fire to disperse crowd of cotton growers leading to death of a farmer in Yavatmal.

Although cotton marketing federation is no more monopoly purchaser of cotton, the Government has agreed to procure crop at minimum support price (MSP) between Rs1,685 to Rs2,020 per quintal based on different varieties of crop.

The Government will only purchase cotton if prices fall down below MSP and farmers can earn profit if private buyers offer price more than MSP. With introduction of MSP, farmers are protected from fall in price in open market.

Even though prices in local market have fallen down to Rs1,500 per quintal which is lower than MSP, federation is either delaying the purchase of crop or not buying at all, sources revealed.

The crop procured by federation so far is 3,81,000 quintals since mid-November, failing to achieve its target of 100,00,000 quintals this season.
