Gujarat to obtain Mumbai's textile hub status

Century Textiles and Industries Limited has ceased operations at Worli in Mumbai. Textiles hub is shifting to Gujarat with textile giants like Raymond and Welspun closing plants in Mumbai and opening new ones in other Indian states.

Ahmedabad is becoming the focus for cotton textiles and Surat the center for synthetic textiles. Additionally, Gujarat has many denim units. Lack of government aid, high levies, input and land costs are factors responsible for closure of factories in Mumbai.

Company President RK Dalmia informed that input costs had upturned largely, which decreased competitiveness of Mumbai's mills against developing mills in other states. Constructing production units in metros is no more affordable now.

Company is building a greenfield composite mill in Bharuch with expected production capacity of 30 million meters, which will commence operations in 2008. Gujarat will facilitate textile firms to procure raw materials and drop freight charges as it is a major cotton producer.
