Silk exports to exceed Rs3,200 cr target for '06-'07

Owing to increasing demand for Indian silk goods in US, UK and other countries, silk exports are showing probability of exceeding the target decided for financial year 2006-07.
Ministry of Textiles had set a Rs2,800 crore target for financial year 2005-06, but export of silk products went up to an all time high of Rs3,194 crores in this period on account of an unexpected boost in overseas demand for local silk goods. This was 14 percent higher than the decided target.
A greater target of Rs3,200 crore has been decided for 2006-07. In the period between April and July this year, silk products worth Rs1,046 crores were exported which is nine percent more than Rs960 crores in same period 2005.
Natural silk yarn fabric exports in this period reached Rs643 crores, which was higher than Rs629 crores last year. Readymade garment exports fetched Rs374 crores, which was up 21 percent from last year. Carpet exports increased from Rs19 crores to Rs23 crores.
US, UK, UAE, Germany and Italy have emerged as the top five importers of local silk products in first four months of current financial year. Net imports of these countries stood at Rs604 crores.
