In order to raise raw silk yarn reeling capacity in Tamil Nadu (TN), Department of Sericulture will be implementing a three-step policy which includes resuming closed public and private reeling facilities and prompting businessmen to start fresh units.
Due to less demand compared to cocoon production in the state owing to much less reeling than required, reeling capacity has to be enhanced. State's 1,450 basins fail to consume total cocoons produced.
Speaking to the media, Sericulture Commissioner Harmander Singh informed that nearly 60 percent of cocoons produced in Tamil Nadu are supplied to Karnataka. Reelers are more in number, so farmers are paid well in Karnataka and there is high demand.
But that state is trying hard to upturn its cocoon production, hence it can stop buying from Tamil Nadu at any time. It is not possible for Tamil farmers to rely completely on Karnataka's reelers.
Department is providing training, guidance and financial aid to entrepreneurs, so that they set up new facilities and 50 percent subsidy will be granted for opening cottage reeling units. Restarting of closed units will enable maximization of reeling capacity.
