Dyeing and bleaching facilities at Tirupur will be going on indefinite strike from January 1, 2007. This could jeopardize the Rs8000-crore knitted garment sector and exporters.
This was decided by Dyers Association of Tirupur at a meeting of its executive committee on December 23, 2006 as retaliation against an order by the Madras High Court.
Farmers' association has accused the 750 dyeing and bleaching units of causing groundwater pollution because effluents generated by these units are discharged into Noyyal river. Madras High Court has been handling the case on this issue for last ten years.
Units have still not found suitable technology for treating effluents, including dissolving of salts. Discharge into oceans is not economically affordable.
To save the sector from ruin, Government should mediate between both parties and solve this issue cordially.
