In order to decrease the impact of imported merchandise by EU enterprises, and protect local consumers' rights and interests, EU has set up some rules and technical standards to control imported merchandises.
Rapid Alert System for Non-Food Consumer Products, RAPEX, is one such initiative introduced in 2004. Under this regulation, EU includes merchandise like soft toys, sport products, furniture, textile and clothing etc.
According to RAPEX, the products which have serious risk to consumers' health and safety, are not allowed to enter EU markets.
As per the RAPEX report, in 2004 388 pieces were prohibited, in 2005 the number shot up to 701 pieces and from January to August this year, there were 596 pieces.
