129 handicrafts exporters to receive Export Awards

The 129 handicrafts exports will receive the 15th annual Export Awards for their outstanding performance during the year 2003-04 and 2004-05 here tomorrow.

The Award presentation ceremony is being organized by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts, an apex body for promotion of Handicrafts. The EPCH instituted this award in the year 1990.

The Minister of Textiles, Shri Shankersinh Vaghela, Minister of State for Textiles, Shri E V K S Elangovan, will also be present on the occasion.

The Awards will be given for excellent performance both on national as well as regional basis to the exporters in 21 product categories.

The award carries trophy and merit certificates in each product group. This year 44 trophies, 64 Merit Certificates, 11 Merit certificates for excellent export growth and 10 merit certificates on regional performance basis will be distributed to the handicrafts exporters.

Besides this, 'Top Export Award' for the highest revenue earner and 'Women Entrepreneur Award' for the top performer amongst women exporters will be presented during the awards ceremony.

The EPCH has also introduced a novel award this year titled “Hat-trick” award, to be presented to achievers for attaining great heights in the field of handicrafts exports and consistently bagging awards in a row during the previous three consecutive years.

The awards presentation has helped greatly in nurturing a healthy competition amongst the exporters, thus boosting foreign exchange earnings for the country.

The handicrafts exports have risen from Rs. 713 crore in 1990-91(the year the awards were started) to Rs. 16,000 crore in 2005-06.
