Cotton disease outbreaks likely to be more frequent in 2007

According to analysis and negotiations among the experts organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, bollworm trend in some areas are expected to aggravate in 2007.
Outbreaks of overall cotton diseases and insect pests are expected to be more frequent, which will occur in about 450 million mu times, among which, insect pests will occur in 370 million mu times, diseases will occur in 80 million mu (one hectare =15 mu).
Wilt disease in the Yellow River Valley multi-years producing areas is expected to become a serious problem, while Yangtze River Valley Region area will be moderate. About 20 million mu will be attacked by wilt disease.
During seedling time, disease will occur moderately in most of the cotton-growing areas. The Yellow River Basin Region will be more serious than the Yangtze River Basin Region. About 22 million mu are expected to occur with wilt disease.
Most cotton-growing areas will be attacked by the disease from light to moderate degrees during cotton bolling period. Affected area will be 18 million mu.
The second-generation of cotton bollworm will occur seriously in the Yellow River Basin and Xinjiang cotton-growing areas, of which, northwest Shangdong and southern parts of Xinjiang are likely to occur in large scale. Problem in other cotton-growing areas will be light. Affected areas will be about 30 million mu.
The third generation of cotton bollworm is expected to become a serious problem in northeast Yellow River Basin and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River Region. The problem in most other cotton-growing areas will be moderate. Affected areas will be 35 million mu.
