Wool textile industry's processing & production decline

Taiwan's wool textile industry, which is almost entirely export orientated, reported a further decline in processing and manufacturing activity during the third quarter of 2006.

Imports of all raw materials, textiles, apparel and accessories rose in both volume and value during Q3 2006, compared with Q3 2005. Imports of greasy wool and wool top, however, showed significant declines in comparison with other raw material (fibre) imports. Lower imports of wool raw materials reflect both reduced domestic processing capacity levels and strong international competition among wool top combers.

Exports of raw materials, textiles, apparel and accessories of all fibre dropped moderately in volume, with export value up slightly in Q3 2006, year-on-year.

For Taiwan's early stage wool processing, the major output and export of wool top declined further in face of stiff overseas competition from China into the South Korean market.

Taiwan's wool top exports to South Korea, China, Iran, India and Vietnam decreased while wool top shipments to Japan improved, now accounting for close to half of all Taiwan's top exports, compared with just one third in January-September 2005.
