An unmatched type of quilt called 'godadi' is made in rural areas of Rajasthan and Gujarat. It is also familiar in drier parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka. This quilt is prepared using torn and faded pieces of cloth from dhotis, saris, skirts, ghagras and so on.
Ladies form groups in their courtyards to make godadis in winter. They bring old clothes and remove buttons, hooks and folds to increase the cloth's length.
All cloth pieces are joined together and whole quilt is stitched up, so that the godadi is bound together firmly. A long piece of sari or two joined dupattas are used as covering for the godadi.
A patchwork sheet is made with tiny pieces of fabrics in bright colours and sari or skirt borders featuring zari and silk, based on the quilt's significance.
Newborn babies are made to wear small sized godadis. This quilt can be worn for a long time.
