To revive slow growing textile and cotton industry, Minister of Commerce, Dr Aliyu Modibbo has inaugurated a Presidential Standing Committee on Cotton and Textiles (PSCCT).
It would evaluate trends and developments of cotton farmers, merchants, ginneries, spinning mills, waving and processing mills, composite mills and trade in finished goods.
Minster expressed concern over significant decline of cotton production as well as textile manufacturing.
So many textile units have shut down or suffered from under utilization of capacity.
According to Aliyu, dumping of textiles and subsidies provided to cotton farmers in western countries are main reason behind downfall of the industry.
He was also concerned about inferior quality of textiles and inadequate financing by the banks.
