Govt keen to achieve target of 15mn cotton bales by 2010

Government takes measures to increase cotton production to reach the target of 15 million cotton bales by 2010.
A cotton production target of 13.816 million bales from an area of 3.247 million hectares in fiscal year 2006-2007 has been fixed by Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA).
Support price policy for cotton is also introduced to protect cotton farmers' interest, sources informed.
Even research programmes are also conducted to enhance cotton production in the country.
Government is also involving private sector in production and distribution of seeds. It is also stressing on the implementation of pest management instead of harmful pesticides.
Many programmes like Cotton standardization and grading are conducted to improve the quality, sources added.
