Textile exports achieved 4.33 percent growth in first half of this fiscal as against same period of previous fiscal. Growth in export of textile products has been brought about by factors like R&D support and textile package.
As per a report by Federal Bureau of Statistics, exports grew 13.80 percent for December 2006-07 in comparison with December 2005-06. Textile exports reached $976.40 million in December 2006-07 as against $857.99 million for same period 2005-06.
Businessmen who were worried over poor performance of exports for textile sector are glad that exports have gone up in November and December of current fiscal.
Among products which saw rise in exports during first half were cotton yarn, silk, synthetic textiles, knitwear and readymade garments.
A big challenge faced by textile sector is high production cost, which is rendering Pakistani textiles uncompetitive in overseas markets. This issue must be considered seriously.
