Textile Commissioner Singh debunks 'redundancy' media report
Jagadip Narayan Singh, IAS, Textile Commissioner, India
Role of Office of The Textile Commissioner of India has changed from being a mere regulator to a body dedicated to comprehensive promotion of the industry.
Speaking to Fibre2fashion, Textile Commissioner Jagadip N Singh, IAS, said, "Gone are days when our office acted as a mere industry regulator. Today, our office plays a very small role in regulatory terms and it does not need to enforce regulations beyond a certain point."
He was reponding to an issue raised in a local newspaper deeming his office as 'redundant'.
Singh also debunked the same report contending that his office was 'facing the axe' and on the contrary, his organization was well entrenched in promoting country's booming textile sector with due focus on developing human resources.
He said, "Indian textile industry as a whole, would have more than 6,000,000 (sixty lakh) jobs to offer in direct employment, and we are working at mobilising manpower on that scale."
The Textile Ministry was more concerned about training and developing such a huge manpower requirement, he added.
Rounding off, Singh expressed hope that the popular Textile Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) would get due extension.
