Dubai to take on jute-bag promotion

Dubai Municipality is encouraging the use of eco-friendly jute bags in supermarkets instead of the plastics.
Officials said that a full fledge promotion campaign will be launched soon, under which jute bags will be distributed at the malls.
UAE currently consumes about 150,000 tons of plastic in the form of bags and other items annually.
Municipality has also revealed that several companies had approached them with a newly developed perishable plastic, which was under consideration.
Sources said, “This new kind of plastic seems to be eco-friendly. We have to first look into all the aspects before arriving at any decision.”
