Though the regions like Yogyakarta, Surakarta and Pekalongan have been known for ethnic batik, the trading city Semarang is trying to catch up with these places.
The Regional National Handicraft Council of Semarang Municipality in cooperation with Bokos Kencono Association of Batik Lovers and Semarang's industry and trade had organized a training course for Small-Scale Industry Handicraft Makers of Batik between November 21 and December 13.
Umi Sumiati, owner of Batik Semarang 16, a hand-drawn batik small-scale company has helped in organising the training course.
During the training, the participants learned various aspects of batik production, including dipping and coloring.
This training course has helped revive the Semarang's unique motifs for hand-drawn batik.
The motifs are dominated by those of flora and fauna. Then there are also curved lines resembling hills or mountains. The color red, with depictions of lotus flowers and ducks were dominant.
Several plants like jelawe, tinggi, secang, jambal, teeran can be used as natural dyes. They produce brown, yellow, blue, red and black.
This training will surely popularize the batik industry in Semarang region of Indonesia.
