Mr Satyanarayana, Director, ICEF, said that traditional craftsman and artisans used natural dyes for centuries. The advent of synthetic dyes with a choice of wide range of colours and economy of scale of operation has rendered natural dyes almost irrelevant.

Today, industries by and large use synthetic dyes oblivious to the environmental pollution these chemicals are causing.

“The Central Pollution Control Board has identified manufacturing and application of synthetic dyes in textiles as one amongst the 17 most polluting industries. Natural dyes are intrinsically biodegradable and hence environment-friendly. The factors that prevent large-scale use of natural dyes in textile industry are limited availability of dyes sources, limited choice of colours with relatively less fastness property and difficulties in large scale application in factories.

The India-Canada Environment Facility (ICEF) was established in 1993 following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of India and the Government of Canada in 1992. It is a joint project of the two governments for the purpose of undertaking environmental projects in the water and energy sectors.
