National Institute of Design (NID) has agreed to help Orissa government set up a State Initiative Design Centre (SIDC), to organize workshops to train crafts persons to design products keeping market trends in mind.

The workshop would focus on enhancing the design according to present trends in order to break monotony of traditional designs, said Activity Chairperson of the Institute's Outreach Programmes, Vijai Singh Katiyar.

NID experts gave terracota artisans tips on product designing at the first workshop, while the current one, which is the second in line of such workshops, is targeting traditional jewellery designers working with brass, copper and silver.

The institute has also lined up similar workshops for bamboo-craft and Ikat handloom.

The last workshop will be a multicraft workshop where artisans will exchange notes to improve product range by working with best traditional practices.

Stone carving, patchitra, and dokra casting, used in making statues and lamp shades are some of the area's well known crafts. Horn-craft, wood carving, applique, coir-making, and cane and bamboo furniture are traditionally practised, informed an official from the Orissa government.

Concerned with improving craftsmen's living conditions government has increased funding to train them for which NID is making every efforts.
