Andhra Govt against allotting more wet land for SEZs

Feb '07
Andhra Pradesh government has decided not to allocate any wet land for the purpose of providing land for creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZ).

The government has till date already approved setting aside 1.5 lakh acres of land for SEZ.

Governor Rameshwar Thakur, while addressing the State Assembly on Monday, informed that the government has allotted 1.5 lakh acres of wet land for SEZ which is 0.24 percent of the State's total land mass and further allocation of wet lands will not be granted unless absolutely necessary.

He said that the State has encouraged setting up of a large number of SEZs to create infrastructure to promote manufacturing and services sectors and help large section of agriculture workforce to migrate to other sectors.

Bharatiya International Consortium is promoting a leather park in Nellore district to manufacture leather garments, leather furniture and footwear.

Apache factory has already started manufacturing the famous Adidas brand of shoes at Tada. Besides these, several leather and textile units are also scheduled to come up in the State.

The South India Mills Association is promoting over 10 spinning mills in Nellore district. New spinning mills are also being set up in Guntur district.

Brandix, Sri Lankan apparel brand, has already begun its operations at Visakhapatnam.
