The first automatic silk reeling unit involving an outlay of Rs3 crore is scheduled to come up in Tamil Nadu, giving a boost to sericulture sector in the State.

The State has 23,000 acres under sericulture producing just about 1,000 tons of silk a year and only 45 percent of the cocoon is consumed here.

The State has only 250 reeling units producing thick variety of silk used mostly to make saris, said officials of Directorate of Sericulture.

The automatic reeling unit that will boost the sector will be imported from China and the plant will soon be operational.

The unit will require about one ton of cocoon (bivoltine variety) every day to produce 120 kg of silk a day, said K L Bhoobash Kangayan, entrepreneur who will establish the unit.

To maintain uniformity of quality, the cocoon will be sourced through contract farming method.

Marketing of silk reeled in automatic unit will be of fine quality and can be used to make different types of fabric, said Kangayan.

Similar quality silk imported from China, costs about Rs.2,000 per kg.

Central Silk Board will allocate Rs.50 lakh as assistance and efforts are on to get about Rs.15 lakh from State Government to provide finance to farmers.
