Recently, local trade associations urged Government to sign Thailand-Japan free trade pact, which would give competitive edge to industries in Japan.

In total, 16 associations from various sectors like footwear and garment raised concerns through Thailand Board of Trade.

Certain countries of Southeast Asia producing similar kinds of goods as of Thailand have already signed free trade pact with Japan. This trade agreement has let them to enjoy low import tariffs.

Even appreciation of local currency to 35 baht against dollar has wane competitiveness in Japan.

If entered into deal, it would boost country's potential as the textile and design hub of Asia.

Last year, country's export value to Japan stood at US $16.4 billion, a year-on-year increase of 8.8 percent.
