CHENNAI:

An international conference on garment technology,`Texinova-07, was hosted by Jaya Engineering College at Central Leather Research Institute, Adyar, last week.

It covered topics on garment supply chain management, innovative effects and manufacturing strategies in garments and issues in garment merchandising.

The conference also addressed issues on garment manufacturing and trends in garment education. This has been made necessary due to entry of several companies into textile industry which requires skilled labour for quality products, especially in garment technology.

Qualified technologists were needed to produce quality garments, said Ronald Postle, Professor of Textile Physics, University of New South Wales, while inaugurating the conference.

B. K. Behera, Professor of Textile Technology, IIT Delhi, said that of the 50 educational institutions in the country, most offered only programmes on textile technology whereas introducing courses in garment manufacturing is important for quality products and help entrepreneurs to compete in global market.

Total garment production by textile mill sector was just three percent with India's production being only four percent in international trade market, he noted.
