Bengal Textile Mills faces closure threat

Bengal Textile Mills is facing threat of being shutdown because Government has declared it will close the mill without notice if factory fails to become profitable.

Bengal Textile Mills is the lone nationalized cotton mill located at Noapara industrial town in Jessore. Mill's condition has been pathetic since 1999, when Government placed it under service charge category.

Factory has 650 permanent staff and 600 day workers, who were not given any remuneration in past four months. Government has refrained from taking responsibility of mill's losses in this situation, considering loan conditions of World Bank.

Bengal Textile Mills has consequently decided to lay off its permanent employees. Managers are instructed to operate the factory with daily based labourers, which would reduce losses.

Outdated machinery hinders the mill from achieving its production target.

Running the mill as per Government's conditions is not feasible and it also refuses to provide subsidy, according to Deputy General Manager Abdul Hannan.
