New orders for manufactured durable goods in January decreased $17.1 billion or 7.8 percent to $203.9 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced. This followed two consecutive monthly increases including a 2.8 percent December increase. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 3.1 percent.
Excluding defense, new orders decreased 7.8 percent. Transportation equipment, down following two consecutive monthly increases, had the largest decrease, $12.3 billion or 18.0 percent to $56.2 billion. This was led by nondefense aircraft and parts, which decreased $11.3 billion.
Shipments: Shipments of manufactured durable goods in January, up five of the last six months, increased $0.5 billion or 0.2 percent to $211.4 billion. This followed a 0.5 percent December increase. Computers and electronic products, up three of the last four months, had the largest increase, $3.6 billion or 10.8 percent to $36.6 billion.
Unfilled Orders: Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in January, up twenty of the last twenty-one months, increased $1.0 billion or 0.1 percent to $695.5 billion. This was at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 2.2 percent December increase. Machinery, up twenty-nine consecutive months, had the largest increase, $1.0 billion or 1.3 percent to $78.8 billion.
Inventories: Inventories of manufactured durable goods in January, up twelve of the last thirteen months, increased $1.0 billion or 0.3 percent to $297.7 billion. This followed a 0.7 percent December increase. Transportation equipment, up four of the last five months, had the largest increase, $1.0 billion or 1.4 percent to $69.5 billion.
