Indefinite strike by Tirupur's job working facilities serving local innerwear brands has entered its eighth day today, with talks failing to resolve their demand that stitching charges be raised.
About 10,000 labourers, who are known as 'Powertable' workers and who stitch vests, briefs and banyans for domestic brands, went on indefinite strike beginning February 26, 2007. They demand 30 percent upturn in stitching charges, claiming that input costs such as labour charges, rent, power, thread and needles have risen.
Members of Tirupur Banyan Stitching Section Owners Association observed a one-day fast on March 2, 2007 in support of workers. Innerwear production of certain brands has declined due to strike.
Strike has harmed 600 stitching units which employ 15,000-18,000 tailors. North Indian firms sourcing apparel on job work basis were held responsible for current situation by labourers.
Stitching charges were not amended in past four years and talks held March 3 went in vain. Management representatives and Powertable workers are holding talks again today.
