44th annual gem show kicks off

The 44th annual gem show at the Myanmar Gems Emporium Hall and Myanmar Convention Center is sponsered by the state-run Myanmar Gems Enterprise (MGE).

The event started yesterday and will last for 13 days until March 20.

The show has put country's quality gems, jade, pearl and jewelry on sale to boost foreign exchange earning.

The emporium will display nearly 6000 jade lots, 400 gem lots and 300 pearl lots.

The organizers expect the attendance of about 2,000 foreign traders and most of them will come from China, China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and Thailand.

The last year's annual Myanmar gems show was attended by 2,380 gem merchants from 16 countries and regions.

The mid-year gems show held in October last year had given boost to gems sale where a total of 2,843 lots of jade, gems and pearls were sold. The event was joined by a total of 3233 foreign and local merchants.

According to official statastics, Myanmar emporiums have earned a total of over $600 million from these events, since it started from 1964.

Myanmar is big producer of gems in the world map like ruby, diamond, cat's eye, emerald, topaz, pearl, sapphire, coral and a variety of garnet tinged with yellow.

There are three famous gem lands in Myanmar, Mogok in Mandalay division, Mongshu in Shan state and Phakant in Kachin state.
