CHENNAI:

Tamil Nadu Government is taking steps to safeguard interests of traditional weavers of the world-renowned Kanchi silk sarees by allotting a special logo for certifying their authenticity.

Government's step is in line with the crisis faced by industry on account of fake silk sarees available in markets.

State Government plans to put in place the 'Geographical Indication Act,' enacted by the State Assembly last year ensuring patent rights as well as allotting of the logo for Kanchi silk.

According to the Act, Kanchi silk weavers would be registered with Handloom Department and sarees woven by them would carry their logo.

Handloom Department officials informed that the logo was ready and Department has already started to receive weaver's applications.

Securitization of applications would take place before registration and the process is expected to be completed in a month's time.

"This is great news and relief for about 50,000 weavers and silk manufacturers in Kanchi, whose lives were greatly affected due to the invasion of fake silk sarees for the last 10 years. This is one of our long-pending demands to protect the world famous and prestigious industry," said Kanchi Silk Manufacturers Association president Y M Narayanasamy.

"This would double the sale of Kanchi silk sarees, since 50 percent of the sarees sold now as Kanchi silk are fake," he added.

Implementation of the Act would definitely save the Kanchi silk industry and put it on an even keel, said Narayanasamy.
