Department of Textile Technology IIT-Delhi is making efforts towards garment sizing specifically meant for Indian body size.

The project includes software that can be used for body size mapping as well as a seven-step approach for developing garment specific size. This will be helpful because there were no standardized data available in Indian context, according to Dr Deepti Gupta, Associate Professor, IIT-D.

She explains, "The Indian garment industry largely relies on body size data borrowed from international markets, or copied and modified from other retail stores. The irony is that Indians do not fit into any standard sizes. Imagine the wastage of material during alterations! We have tried to show how a scientific approach can be made towards a standardised size chart."

"Indian sizes are unique so a standardised size chart is definitely needed in the industry. For instance, Indian women have a more curvaceous figure than their counterparts in other parts of the world. Even within the country, size variations exist between the North and the South. Besides which, the fall and drape of a garment is less affected by alterations should the benchmark size be accurate, even though minor alterations in prêt are unavoidable," Nisha Jamvwal, noted designer opines.

"Often, they have to rely on the local tailor for the correct fitment. Indian sizes do not match even the Asian sizes, which are as close to guessing Indian standards as any retail chain can get," said Mayur Toshmiwal, Zonal Manager for a retail chain.

Most countries have a central data bank for sizes whereas no authentic data is yet available in India, so a knowledge bank will be of great value.
