Malta is keen on early conclusion of the broad-based Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement between India and the European Union (EU) as such a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) would benefit all the participating countries, including Malta.
This was stated by Dr. Michael Frendo, Foreign Minister of Malta, when he called on Shri Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, here last evening. Malta joined the European Union on 1st May 2004.
Its membership of the EU coupled with its thriving trade with India makes Malta a useful interlocutor for our trade policy negotiations with the European Commission.
Shri Kamal Nath expressed happiness at the warm and friendly relations between India and Malta cemented by mutuality of interests, especially in the field of trade and investment between the two countries.
He also expressed satisfaction of the growing trade between India and the Malta, which was to the tune of US $ 122 million in 2005-06 as against US $ 69 million in 2004-05.
Malta has decided to open a High Commission in New Delhi. Shri Kamal Nath said India would extend all assistance and support to the new Maltese High Commission.
