Planning and Development Department of China Petroleum and Chemical Corp said on Thursday that country's annual ethylene production will reach 16 million tons by 2010, when consumption is likely to grow to 25 million tons per year.

Meanwhile, consumption of this year is estimated to be 20 million tons per year.

As the planned expansion of cracker this year, China's imports of ethylene may remain unchanged.

The joint venture of a cracking project in Fujian refinery by China Petroleum and Chemical Corp, Exxon Mobil and Saudi Aramco will be completed in 2008, will start operation by early 2009 and is expected to produce 800,000 tons ethylene per year.

In Tianjin, Sinopec plans to invest a plant with annual capacity of one million tons ethylene in the first half of 2009.

Due to a series of cracker expansion, China's imports of naphtha will not be clearly increased this year.
