Garment exports record stable growth

Garments export has continued its growth at a steady rate. Clothing sector has been able to maintain its leading position among other exporting sectors despite various negative developments in the international markets.

Turkey's clothing export increase was 25.5 percent in 2003, 13.7 percent in 2004, and 4.7 percent in 2005. The recorded export data for 2006 has been announced by the Turkey Exporters Assembly (TIM). According to the data, clothing has exported $13.99 billion during 2006. Comparing to the previous year, there is a 2.1 percent increase in the clothing export. With such an export performance, the clothing industry has kept its leading position among the country's exporting industries.

There is no fall in the export to the major regional groups except for the Other OECD countries. The increases changes from one group to the other. The export to the Other OECD country group that compromise of the countries such as US, Switzerland, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Norway, has decreased 17.2 percent.

The EU with its share of 76.3 percent has kept its position of being the biggest market for the clothing export. It is also a major determinant of the export performance of the sector. The clothing export to the EU-25, as compared to the last year, has increased 3.3 percent.

Clothing export to Germany has showed a picture of stagnation at a 4.8 percent decline. The roots of these negative developments go back to 2004, when the Central Bank of Germany claimed that the German export is decreasing due to rise in oil prices and Euro evaluation.
