Basri Özcoban of Board of Taris Cotton and Oily Seeds Association declared that due to the possible drought in the summer, cotton planting will decrease by 50 percent.
Özcoban told further that this will lead to increase of cotton imports from 850000 tons last year to 1 million. Moreover, cotton seeds demand of farmers decreased by 50 percent from beginning of the season .
According to Özcoban, "Now the Government and the textile sector should see how bad the situation of Turkish cotton production is. Turkey is second after China in importing cotton. I think during this season, we will leave China behind in import."
Özcoban added, "Our farmers should accept the fact of drought and should do the planting and sowing accordingly. The Government should pay more attention to cotton, which is a raw material to textile, apparel, oil and food sector. The cotton planting should be supported with incentives.
